J-1 INTERNSHIP
Requirements & Procedures

Eligibility

  • Must be foreign nationals

  • Currently enrolled College/University Students

  • GPA 3.0 / 4.5 or above

  • TOEFL score iBT 75 or above

  • Be proficient in English

  • No reason for disqualification to obtain J-1 VISA

  • Sufficient financial certification of over $10,000

Required Documents

  • Application 

  • A copy of Valid Passport

  • Resume and Cover letter in english

  • Copy of College/University Certification of Enrollment

  • Copy of College/University Transcript 

  • iBT TOEFL score or equivalent test score

  • Financial Statement

Qualification

No reason for disqualification to obtain J-1 VISA

  • No subject to 2 year foreign residency requirement

  • Must meet the eligibility criteria by Official Sponsor of the Organization

  • Must be able to demonstrate funding in order to meet minimum funding requirements

Insurance Policy

Program participants and their dependents are required to have medical insurance coverage with the following minimum benefits [22 CFR 62.14]

  • Medical benefits of at least $100,000 per accident or illness

  • Repatriation of remains in the amount of $25,000

  • Expenses associated with the medical evacuation of the exchange visitor to his or her home country in the amount of $50,000

  • A deductible not to exceed $500 per accident or illness. 

English Language Proficiency

In order to meet the eligibility criteria, 22 CFR 62.10 (a)(2), the student must have proficiency in English Language skills. Columbia College requires students to demonstrate English-language proficiency by submitting either TOEFL or IELTS scores, then interview the participant to evaluate their english communication level.

PROCEDURES

Please be familiar with the following points concerning J-1 VISA

  • J-1 VISA is valid only when accompanied by the Form DS-2019 sent to the student by Columbia College

  • The student may receive training as described in the Columbia College approved training plan that accompanied your DS-2019

  • Federal regulations prohibit work, training, and/or financial compensation for activities that are outside of the approved Exchange Visitor Program

  • The student is not allowed to change programs or site without the consent of Columbia College

  • The student is responsible for contacting Columbia College if any changes or problems arise during the program

  • The student must have valid Health Insurance during the Exchange Visitor Program and he/she will carry the health insurance card at all times
